our day in denver.

millie was asked to be in a prescription pets calendar for the childrens hospital. we took her to a studio in denver to have her photos taken... she was paired with a sweet dog named kayla. millie was such a ham and loved all of the attention! and she didnt mind the dog being beside her... as long as it didnt get in her face or look at her- sitting up in the chair helped too. the photographer will have a few photos of just millie available for purchase at some point, and the calendar will be available sometime in the fall for purchase/donation. im happy we decided to do it! such a fun memory!
we decided to make an adventure out of our drive to denver... a few thrifts until dinnertime.
and dinner downtown at steuben's. it has been on our list to try, and it was perfect! tasty comfort food... mac 'n cheese, pot roast, and a vanilla milkshake! and the milkshake was our drink- not our dessert...
because we had dessert at little man ice cream... it was mentioned to us by a friend to try and it was so good!
what a great day!

our day.

Millie seems to be feeling much better today... back to her normal self. She is moving and playing and laughing lots. And she seems to have her appetite back- either the zinc is doing it's job of increasing her appetite or it is because she feels better. I am happy this wasn't a hard or long hospital stay, and that she has adjusted quickly back at home. And she is happy to be back home too!

what a doll!
she loves her little people.
she loved her dinner... a grilled cheese sandwich.
oh and... she bit me for the first time tonight. it hurt.

an update.

We all woke up around 7 this morning... the sun shining in our east-facing room and the nurse change woke us up a bit earlier than normal. I was excited to see that one of our favorite nurses from our transplant stay was Millie's nurse for the day... she loves liver transplant babies and was so excited to see Millie doing so well. I fed Millie, got her & myself ready for the day, and then headed downstairs for a coffee. She loved riding in the wagon... and getting attention from everyone that saw her. She is just too cute! We headed back up to the room and found out that the doctor had come by her room for his rounds & to give us the results of the biopsy. Darn it! We played for awhile, and then as I was feeding her the rest of a bottle- the doctor came in. He had great news... it is not rejection!! The biopsy didn't show any mild or severe signs of rejection. And it didn't seem to show any signs of a virus either. He said that we were free to go today! Yay! We began packing up the room, a nurse came in & removed Millie's IV, and we waited for our discharge paperwork & instructions from our nurse. She will need to have labs done next Monday, and they are increasing her anti-rejection medication dose. They want to see her sometime in the next 2weeks to check in on weight & labs. We said goodbye to our sweet nurse & to Children's... and headed home. She fell asleep within minutes of being in the car, and took a 3hour nap this afternoon once we were home. We are so relieved that this wasn't rejection! We realize that we will have ups & downs with Millie's health during her childhood... we are just hoping that her new liver stays comfortable in that little body of hers! Thanks for all of your love & prayers!

a walk to get coffee for mama.
waiting to hear the results... someone needed a nap.
no more IV!
the scrunch face.
so happy!
yay! im going home!
goodbye childrens!
headed home.

millies liver biopsy.

Millie's liver biopsy was this morning, and it went very well! We got up around 7am to get out of the house by 8... this is early for Millie & I! We got ready, packed the car, and said goodbye to our house on time, with a sleepy mama & a cranky baby. One of the hardest parts about surgeries & procedures, is that she has to stop eating solids 8hours prior & formula/milk 6 hours prior. It helps when they are scheduled for the morning, but 11:15 is a bit rough for a little one that doesn't understand. Millie was fine in the car until about Castle Rock, when she became very whiny. We stopped for some PediaLyte, which she can have until 2hours prior, but she was not happy with that. She eventually calmed down & took a little snooze for the last bit of the drive. She had labs done when we first arrived, and then we went through the check-in process for our wrist bands. The next step was to get checked in up on the surgical floor. We went to her pre-op room and got her changed into her hospital pajamas. I couldn't believe that the smallest size finally fit her! They tried to give them to me to put on her when she was just a couple of months old... and of course they were so huge! We met with her liver doctor, a few nurses, and the anesthesia team to go over the details & risks of the procedure. They then took her down to radiology for an ultrasound mark to find the best spot for the biopsy. Once we were back up in her room, we still had over an hour until her scheduled time. Yikes! Thank goodness we were told about the playroom down the hall... she needed some distraction from her hunger & normal naptime. She played with toys & met other little ones waiting for their surgeries. We made it back to her room with a bit of time left to go... we turned down the lights and G rocked her to almost sleep. They came in to get her just a few minutes later. We gave hugs & kisses, and they took her back. They said to expect it to be about an hour and a half. We decided to head out to get some fast food, because the cafeteria options weren't looking so hot. As we were beginning to eat, back at the hospital, we got a call that Dr. Mack was finished and ready to chat with us. It only took about 30minutes! She showed us photos from the endoscopy- everything looked great. No issues in her esophagus. And she said that the biopsy went well and that she was already awake in recovery, waiting for us to come see her. We finished eating and headed back to the surgery waiting room. The receptionist took us back to the PACU to see her... she was calm & relaxed. In the past she has been more upset & crying when she sees us- not this time. They were calling her mellow Millie. They just loved her. After an hour of watching her, checking vitals & making sure she took some clear liquids, we were taken up to her room on the 6th floor. We settled in to the room and met her nurse. He let us know that she needed to stay on her back for the next 3hours... she was up and moving around in her crib until we turned on the tv in her room. And then she was hooked! It lasted for about 30minutes before she started moving around again. We knew she was tired & hungry, so I decided to hold her & give her her first bottle of PediaSure since the night before- this put her right to sleep. She slept on me for the next 2hours. When she woke up she was ready to move and play! The nurse came in and unhooked her from all of the monitors & hep-locked her IV... which meant she was a free girl! We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening playing & entertaining her. We were so excited to see her happy & jabbering & playing like her normal self! And now we just have to wait and hope for great news in the morning!

headed to childrens...
we had to wake her up early & we couldnt feed her.
she was a bit cranky.

labs & check-in.

time in the pre-op room.
the smallest size pajamas finally fit her!

an ultrasound was done to mark the spot for the biopsy.

we had a lot of time to fill...
and it was especially difficult with a hungry & tired baby.
thank goodness for the playroom!

and right before they came to get her... she took a quick nap with dada.
they asked if we wanted to walk her back to the OR.
no thanks.
she did really well walking off with the nurse, thank goodness.
she waved goodbye to us.
i dont want to see the OR, unless she really needs me.

recovery.
her PACU nurses loved her... the called her mellow millie.
this was the calmest that we had seen her post procedure & anesthesia.
she was making her normal silly faces & smiling at everyone.
and then she discovered all of the cords.
and became a bit defiant about laying still.
she took her first bottle... apple juice & water. a special treat for her.
and then we headed up to the room.

they wanted her to stay on her back for 4hours after the biopsy.
we made it up to her room with 3hours to go...
thank goodness for the tv!
she watched tangled for a bit from her bed, and then became antsy.

i decided to hold her to keep her on her back...

and after her first bottle of pediasure, she finally fell asleep.
and slept for about 2hours.

after her nap, her nurse unhooked her from the monitors & her IV.
she was free to move around & play! and eat a little ice cream!

after skyping with the grandparents, we got her ready for bed.
she fell asleep around 8:45... and they came in at 9 for medicine & vitals.
of course.
she fell asleep again around 9:30.
and heres hoping we have a great night of sleep!
we will have results around 10am tomorrow.
